چکیده

Results of 2D molecular dynamics (MD) method are presented for the mixing phenomenon in the microscale, where the length and time are measured in terms of microns and nanoseconds, respectively. Particle ensembles consisting of 0.7–3 × 106 particles in 1.3–5×105 timesteps were simulated. We focus on the temporal evolution of mixing layer between two superimposed Lennard–Jones particle systems in a gravitational field directed from the heavier to the lighter particle fluid, and compare its properties with those observed in the macroworld. It is shown that the bubble-and-spikes stage of mixing process is similar in both the molecular scale and in the macroworld. The mixing layer growth constant A, which can be estimated using MD, is approximately the same as that obtained for 2D simulations in the macroscale, where the Navier–Stokes equations are used. For the closed particle systems, we show that the value A remains stable for changing physical conditions, as it is in the macroscale. For the open particle systems with a free surface A is 20% higher and reaches the value 0.07, i.e., the same as that obtained in laboratory experiments. The influence of fluid granularity on the speed of mixing can be observed at a very early stage. This start-up time is connected with spontaneous instabilities formation, which appears as the cumulative result of thermal fluctuations. The occurrence of Rayleigh–Taylor instability in the microscale, and its similarity to the same process in the macroscale, can also expand the scope of the term “turbulence” to microscaled flows on the molecular scale. ©2000 Elsevier Science B.V. Numerical Simulation of Free Surface in the Case of Plane Turbulent Wall Jets in Shallow Tailwater

Wall-jet flow is an important flow field in hydraulic engineering, and its applications include flow from the bottom outlet of dams and sluice gates. In this paper, the plane turbulent wall jet in shallow tailwater is simulated by solving the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equations using the standard  turbulence closure model. This study aims to explore the ability of a time splitting method ...

Numerical Simulation of Scaling Effect on Bubble Dynamics in a Turbulent Flow around a Hydrofoil

A Lagrangian-Eulerian numerical scheme for the investigation of bubble motion in turbulent flow is developed. The flow is analyzed in the Eulerian reference frame while the bubble motion is simulated in the Lagrangian one. Finite volume scheme is used, and SIMPLEC algorithm is utilized for the pressure and velocity linkage. The Reynolds stresses are modeled by the RSTM model of Launder. Upwind ...

Eddy mixing in jet-stream turbulence under stronger stratification

[1] Certain qualitative changes in turbulent eddy mixing during transitional regimes towards stronger stratification are highlighted using high-resolution numerical simulations. The behavior of turbulent eddy mixing parameters found in this study is consistent with some recent observational results in stably stratified shear flows in the atmosphere. In particular, the flux Richardson number inc...

Wavelet filtering to study mixing in 2D isotropic turbulence

This paper presents the application of coherent vortex simulation (CVS) filtering, based on an orthogonal wavelet decomposition of vorticity, to study mixing in 2D homogeneous isotropic turbulent flows. The Eulerian and Lagrangian dynamics of the flow are studied by comparing the evolution of a passive scalar and of particles advected by the coherent and incoherent velocity fields, respectively...
